For many people in the workforce having a flexible schedule is more important than hourly pay. Lyft is a company that allows its employees to work on their terms.
If you’re looking to supplement your current income, or if you’d like to drive full-time, this job is for you. Your criminal past does not mean that you can’t work for the things you need to survive.
About Lyft
Lyft is what’s known as a “ride-sharing” company. This is where a driver uses his or her vehicle to pick up riders using the company’s app.
Living in California, John Zimmer used technology to create a business. Other driving services didn’t offer customers the option to interact with their drivers.
Later, he met Logan Green and the two developed LYFT. A ride-sharing company that allows drivers to use their app and make fares from their vehicles.
With hard work and a great idea, the two have created a corporation that operates all over the US. Operating in 644 cities there are a lot of opportunities for drivers to work.
Lyft drivers receive tips and make more money when during peak times. You can also get discounts on insurance and if you don’t have a car there is a rental program to get you started.
Does Lyft Hire Felons?
Lyft does have guidelines for hiring felons. Getting hired will depend on the nature of your crime. If you’ve had a previous DUI you may have to wait 7 years before being eligible to drive.
If your past reveals a sex-related crime you won’t be able to work for the driving company. This also goes for anyone whose conviction is a result of hurting another person.
Does Lyft Run Background Checks?
Lyft will do a background check on all potential employees. This will check your past on a National level using Checkr Inc.
Due to the nature of the job the company needs to take precautions when hiring. If someone gets hurt because Lyft hired a convicted felon, the company could be liable.
Careers at Lyft
Although there are other careers, most employment opportunities are for drivers. If you’d like to pursue an office job for the company, you may want to use the time as a driver to get an education.
For most, being a driver for the company is a great way to make money. As a driver, you may make a flat fee for picking up your fair, get paid per mile, or get paid for the time you spend on the road.
Assuming you get the job, you will also have to work to keep it. Lyft reserves the right to stop you from driving.
Each rider that you transport can give you a review. Based on your reviews or complaints you may have, you may no longer be a driver.
If you can stay on as a driver you will have opportunities to keep all your tips as well as your pay from the company.
You will also have the opportunity to make more money depending on your ride. The company will pay you more hourly if you drive a high-end car. With the Lyft Lux packages, qualifying vehicles will get you more money.
Application Process at Lyft
You can apply to drive for Lyft through their app or on their website at https://www.lyft.com/driving-jobs. The process is simple, but you will need to provide documentation.
Driving for Lyft means that you have to live in a certain area. You can only pick up within certain locations but can drive up to 100 miles outside of this to drop off your rider.
You will upload your driver’s license, proof of insurance and other information. This documentation varies depending on the state and city you live in.
If you’re in a personal vehicle it will have to pass Lyft’s inspections. This is to ensure that the vehicle is safe and reliable.
You can check your application status online or in the app. Once approved you will get a notification and begin collecting fares.
